A 20-year-old man was on Tuesday flogged 40 lashes for eating a mango fruit during Ramadan. Ibrahim Ismail was found guilty of eating during the Islamic holy month by an upper Shariah court in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The judge, Safiyanu Ya’u, ordered that the victim should be flogged 40 times in a market square to served as a deterrent to others. He said the action of the victim contravenes section 370 of penal code law of Jigawa State. The victim, Mr Ismail, was earlier arrested and prosecuted by the state Hisbah board (also known as the Sharia police) for eating a mango while other healthy Muslims are observing the Ramadan fast. A woman has thrown her own baby inside a well in a community in Delta state, stunning everyone. There was pandemonium Thursday in Ekuigbo community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State following the death of a male child after his mother allegedly threw him into a well, Vanguard reports. Though details of the incident were sketchy as at the time of this report, sources from the community said the mother, aged 17, was reported to have thrown her 9-month-old son into a well owing to her inability to carter for his welfare. The mother, identified as Eguonor Joseph, according to local sources, had dropped her baby, Harrison Joseph inside a well in the community at about 5a.m but the remains of the baby was discovered at about 1:50p.m by persons who had gone to fetch water from the well. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the remand in prison custody of hip hop artist, Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley. Justice Nicholas Oweibo on Monday ordered his remand after his arraignment before the court on 11 counts of alleged credit card fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed the charge against him on Tuesday, May 14. When the counts were read to him, Naira Marley pleaded not guilty. The court fixed May 30 for arguments on his application for bail. The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man over alleged attempt to rape a nurse at her duty post at a clinic in Taludu quarters, Gwale Local Government Area. The spokesman of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect, Bashir Yahaya, on May 12, trailed his victim to the clinic and used a sharp knife to inflict an injury on her neck in his wild attempt to rape her. He added that the victim who was left with a deep cut on her neck was rescued by one Zayyanu Abdulhamid who also suffered a knife-cut injury from the suspect. The injured woman has since been treated and discharged from the hospital while the suspect is in police custody under investigation. Kiyawa said the suspect, who was nearly lynched by the mob, was arrested at the scene and the exhibit of knife with blood stain recovered from him. According to NewTelegraph, an Ikeja High Court yesterday sentenced a 33-year-old student of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Allen Abiodun, to death by hanging. Abiodun was found guilty of killing his younger brother, Allen Wale, in 2013. But after his arrest, Abiodun had told his interrogators, Wale was his enemy. He said: “My younger brother has been threatening to kill me for the past two years now and I am happy I have finally killed my enemy.” Abiodun’s conviction yesterday came six years after he stabbed Wale to death with a broken bottle. He was found guilty and convicted for murder contrary to Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011. The state prosecutor, O. R. Ahmed-Muil, who had earlier called four witnesses against the convict, said Abiodun was arraigned on February 20, 2013 for killing his brother, Wale, at Imude village, Oto-Awori. The unsual delay has created room for anxiety and suspicion among some Nigerians. Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB spokesman, told The Sun on Saturday, that they appreciate the anxiety and concerns of candidates. He, however, requested that JAMB be allowed to do the necessary things before releasing the result. He said that though results were released pretty much earlier in 2017 and 2018, it was necessary for the board to improve on its credibility this time around. According to him, many candidates had in the past, escaped with illegitimate acts they perpetrated during the UTME exercise, but that won’t be allowed to continue.
